A good general dictionary but with some annoying features. Firstly the printing is small enough so that it is often difficult to distinguish the various vowel points, such as whether a particular vowel is a patach or a tsere. I've supplemented the book with a magnifying glass!For any particular English word, it provides several Hebrew translations but does not distinguish between them. For example, if you look up 'part' you will find 7 Hebrew translations without knowing when to use which one. However, the word is followed by some very useful expressions containing the word 'part' such as 'in part', 'play a part' etc.An oddity I've found is that occasionally I will look up the Hebrew word for an English word and find several translations so I will then look up each Hebrew translation individually to distinguish them, only to find that sometimes one of those words doesn't exist in the Hebrew-English part of the dictionary.My Hebrew speaking friends have found this a very useful dictionary for learning English (apparently it is a standard for students of English in Israel) but I have found it slightly frustrating as a reference for learning Hebrew. Nevertheless its advantages vastly outweigh its disadvantages.
I have no idea how good or bad the book is. I cant read it.I even tried with a 2 x magnifying sheet.If you are a beginner and need to see the vowel markings, then forget this.It would be much better to have this dictionary in 4 volumes with the font size 10 x this large....then to sell a book no one can use.Please DO pay attention to other reviewers who say the print is way too small. They are not lying.I had others try.Same problem re the font being too small.
The actual information in the book is great, but the physical book itself has two issues:1. It is structurally weak. After a couple months, some of the pages came completely off the spine, despite fairly typical usage.2. Some of the print is tiny so people like me may have trouble distinguishing letters without a magnifying glass. For example, it can be hard to tell apart tsere and patach without squinting.
I like this dictionary a lot, and find it much easier to use than its predecessors, the Ben-Yehuda and Meggido dictionaries. I heartily recommend it.First, props where they're due: the existence of Modern Hebrew is directly attributable to the vision and tenacity of one man: Eliezer Ben-Yehuda. At the turn of the 20th Century, and in the face of naysaying and mockery, he breathed life into a language that had not been used colloquially for some 2,000 years. This monumental achievement was a milestone in world history, as was the dictionary he created.When I was a new immigrant and high-school student in Israel in the 1970s, the Ben-Yehuda was pretty much it. The Megiddo came along somewhere along the line. But to be honest, being new to Hebrew, I always found them to be confounding, especially for looking up verbs, which were listed by their root (shoresh) letters.The Oxford is SO much easier to use, and even in this paperback edition, I find just about everything need.I agree with some of the criticism of others here:The vowel markings (nekudot) are so tiny, they are often really hard to read.More importantly, when there are multiple translations of a single word, more explanation of the different usages would be very, very helpful. Sometimes, when I don't know which word to use, I resort to looking up the choices on the Hebrew side, to see if the translation back to English gives a clue. That's something that must be addressed in future editions.And, as one commenter noted here, it would be great to have a bit more about grammar and usage -- including an explanation of the rules for vowels (nikkud).But, for those reviewers who complain that the English side of the Oxford is much larger than the Hebrew, please remember that the contemporary language is barely a century old vs. English which has been evolving for well over a millennium. Apparently, the Hebrew Academy puts 2,000 new words into circulation each month, but there's a lot of catching up to do.
This is a lovely dictionary for someone who is a beginner, and still needs to read with nikkud. I found it easy to look up words I didn't know. The expressions and idioms that are included were really handy to get some idea of how to express myself. More advanced speakers of Hebrew will find it very helpful too. If the typeface could be a little larger, it would have been handy, but it wasn't a huge drawback. I highly recommend this dictionary.
It's a solid English-Hebrew/Hebrew-English dictionary. I studied Hebrew language for a while and used this dictionary frequently. Authentic Hebrew alphabet was there, and it is very useful for me to know spelling of words as well as their pronunciation. I plan to resume learning Hebrew soon.
very tiny print, I guess it has to be to have so many words, but I have a hard time seeing it.
I studied Hebrew 20 years ago. Forgot a lot. This dictionary helps me to study again. It's helpful.
