If you are looking to share a palatable version of the first Thanksgiving with a small child, this isn't it. I would recommend this for probably second grade and up, but it may be too disturbing for a younger audience because of the level of historical accuracy. If your child is particularly sensitive, shelve this one for the next year or two, and stick to Charlie Brown.
Here are some quotes from the book that I wish I knew about before I bought it:"They've been warned that Indians may attack them."..."Suddenly they see Indians! But the Indians are frightened and run away.""Indians are sighted nearby. They come closer and closer. Then one day an Indian walks right into the settlement. The children are terrified. But the Indian smiles and says Welcome."..."They want to trust the friendly Indian."It says that Squanto liked the Pilgrims and decided to live with them.It refers to Massasoit as an Indian king, which makes no sense.It says that the "Indians" and the Pilgrims made a treaty that they will not harm each other. It says that the treaty was kept for 54 years and refers to the "Indians" as their new friends.I'm going to return this book and find one that is more historically accurate and less whitewashed. I made the mistake of reading this book to my 5 year old and got very tired of correcting the language from "Indians" to "Native Americans" all the time.
What a great book to own. We gave it to our grandson and he loved it. History is so very important for our children to know about this great history of how our first Thanksgiving came about!

Step up to Reading is a perfect tool for getting children interested in readying
Exactly what I was looking for and I am a history major. I was searching for a version that my child can understand without delving too deep into the politics of the era. When he is older we will be discussing the nuances of that period in American history in much greater detail but for now this little book is great.
I've got kids between 2 and 7. For every holiday, I make an effort to teach my kids the real story so they have a deeper understanding of why we do what we do. This book is perfect for kids in the Kindergarten-to-3rd grade age range.
Exactly what I wanted for homeschool! I was looking for a book to explain to my 5 yr old why we celebrate Thanksgiving and the importance of it. This one fit the bill, and will be used next year as well!
