I listened to this book on Overdrive audio and really enjoyed the insight of this author's opinions. I agreed with 99% of what he discussed. Every American and immigrant should either read this book or listen to it because it speaks the truth in my opinion. Worth every second listening to it. The book does repeat itself during the first couple of chapters, but it does that to make a connection before you get into the late chapters that deal specifically with certain aspects of opinion. This book outlines why America is great and how we are imploding on ourselves. He basis he opinions on his comparison of not only India, but of many countries. He discusses slavery and the current bid by Jesse Jackson to sue the American Government for reparations and of which he calls "bulls***" on. A well researched, well thought out, developed story of one immigrants journey to become assimilated into America. Those that come to America expecting free merchandise, instant wealth and this nation to bow at their previous countries culture need to wake up. America is imploding and Mr. D'Souza explains why. He uses history as a means to explain why the way America is and without America most of the rest of the world would still be living in the dark ages.
Great book. Must read. No one is perfect and since countries or governments are products of men then obviously no country or government is perfect. So we have all made mistakes and so has every country on earth since the beginning of time. But this book puts in perspective the bad, but more importantly, the good that the USA has done and shows why we are an exceptional nation and deserving of patriotism and pride.Well done and great and important read for all Americans and those striving to be Americans.
After reading Letters to a Young Conservative, this book has many of the same themes. However, reading these same themes does not tire the reader as it is important to understand the principles of freedom and justice and why they make America great. Does America have its problems? Yes, but that would miss the point. Every country has its problems, but America has transformed the face of this world with a form of government that balances freedom with an individual's quest for virtue.
Great book written by an immigrant who really appreciates what America has done for him. He looks at the history of how America became the country it has been in the past. He gives a clarion call on what needs to be done to keep America great.
I read this book shortly after it was published and it has circulated to many friends of varying educational and political sophistication, gathering consistantly rave reviews from them. So I thought that this is a book that needn't be reviewed here, but on reading the reviews, I was somewhat surprised by what was said. I am a retired lawyer who has been a passionate amateur historian for my entire adult life. I understand America's history pretty well, and that of Western Civilization, and as a result of pre- September 11 tensions in the Middle east, had become fairly well informed about its history, too, which interest intensified as a result of 9/11. As my sons and their friends made their way through school, I was both surprised and troubled by how little history was taught, and how distorted it was, when it was taught. I was equally troubled by the strangely negative attitude of academicians, especially at the college level, to the values America ostensibly represents, and found the concept of multiculturalism to be highly amusing, until I realized that the academic community, in large part, believes in it! Dinesh D'Souza is the kind of person with whom I could enjoy engaging in conversation over dinner about this stuff(and, yes, it's an invitation), because he is informed and articulate. While I don't agree in toto with his position, it is, in the main, supported by history . His analysis of why Western Civilization is superior to others (secularization of government, capitalism and pursuit of science) is correct. Some, because of a political or academic point of view, may disagree, but the fact is that no other civilizations have produced "value" like the West. And by value, I don't refer only to industrially manufactured goods or scientific invention (but ask anyone to identify a major advance in science that originated in the Middle East, or a major medical school in Africa). "Value" icludes cultural genius like Mozart, Goethe, or Da Vinci; it includes great thinkers, writers, statesmen and military leaders. This fascinating book examines all of these points and more. D'Souza is an excellent writer, as well as a very insightful person. Do not be deceived by the naysayers on this book. Get it, read it, and spend some quiet time reflecting on what you have read. It will make you feel good about this great land of ours. And whoever said that patriotism was a bad word? Not around here, anyway.
What a fabulous book. Written by an immigrant and naturalized American this book offers a uniqe perspective on what makes America so great. And he hits so many things right on the head that many natural born citizens don't seem to comprehend.Dinesh (the author) touches on so many issues and perspectives but you must read them to get the jist of what he is talking about. He hits the nail on the head so often. When talking about the perspective of the Arabs on the United States as to what we think of them, "camel jockeys" ect. He is right in many ways. When he talks of how we should respond to the 9-11 attacks he speaks from a middle-eastern perspective (he is from India). He talks of slavery and the African-American perspective and also speaks of the confrontations he has had with Jesse Jackson and their conflicting perspectives. That of a new immigrant as opposed to a supposedly down-trodden minority. This is a very important and informative book. Although many may not like it or consider in controversial or even too patriotic in its view I feel that it should be read by every American and immigrant. If only more Americans would have the overall view of this immigrant and naturalized American perhaps we would understand ourselves better. A GREAT BOOK! Buy it, read it and think on it. More folks like Dinesh D'Souza in the United States would make it a better country. He is intelligent, insightfull and patriotic!
