Talk about a flashback!When I found out my old friend NK had written a book about his years of flying those crazy motorless birds... I had to get it. I was interested to see if my memories from all those years ago were correct. Gary's tale is one of almost blind perseverance at learning and then excelling at the amazing sport of sailplane racing and cross country flight...sans engine. Gary would go places no one would ever think of trying fly to with no engine... some places even with an engine would be daunting.His recounting of thousands of hours flight time, often during some very interesting conditions and situations, can be both fascinating and terrifying all at the same time. Gary is not bashful about analizing his mistakes and sometimes questionable decisions... he has never been described as timid, that is for sure.Gary is a good soul with an amazingly tolerant wife .... Nancy you are truly a full partner in Gary's life.... after hearing some of these tales of retrieves from no-where land, I am amazed that you hung in there with this bear of a man!Want to know what it takes to be a top tier sailplane pilot ... a must read!
Hail Gary Kemp. Gary is a true competitor. His love and appreciation for soaring is deeply infectious from back when we landed out a lot and liked it. His "lets go somewhere" from about halfway up the first thermal of the day became a muse. Before cell phones, GPS, SPOT, FLARM and hand held computers. When it was just you, a mid performance often wooden or metal glider, a few steam gages and the big playground in the sky. The discussions were generally about all about flying, competing, thermals and the weather. Missing was the latest upgrade discussion for this years wonder screen, shameless self promotion to star status based on an internet connection and uncivil snarky comments posted anonymously between members of the tiny band of brothers. Gary, while not as well known, is cut from the same cloth as the get-it-done generation of Karl, Dick, George and Doug. Guys you know based on their creativity, drive, guts and achievements not their ability master social media. Do not get me wrong I am as appreciative in how far we have come in soaring and society generally as the next guy and it may be just my youth that I miss but Gary's book opens a reminder of a slightly different age and for that I am grateful.
If you have ever met this author you will quickly recognize that you have been invited to read the fascinating details of a lifetime of daily journals, written by a man who has been true to himself as well as to all who are dear to him. The stories reflect personal feelings, unencumbered by any form of exaggeration or hyperbole. The excitement is slow to build as the chronicles unfold. Those unfamiliar with capabilities of non powered flying machines may find it difficult to believe some of these interesting tales, while readers familiar with the sport of Soaring will marvel at the modesty of this accomplished adventuring pilot. All readers will undoubtedly find the stories to be thoroughly enjoyable. A refreshing and welcome book, coming at a time when the rest of the world is in near turmoil.
As documented by the other reviewers, the author chronicals his development from an enthusiastic newbie sailplane pilot into a top notch competition and record setting soaring pilot supported by his wonderful wife Nancy. Readers who crossed paths with him at points during his over 40 years in flying will enjoy his extensive memories of sharing exciting times of which they may have only distant memories themselves, but Gary documented much better. Because of the respect other pilots had for him, he became a sought after contest director and Soaring Society of America director and international team manager. However, his most lasting legacy in soaring, I think, will be that he was a number of times the pioneer of new events and new soaring locations that drew people to them by way of Gary's great example and enthusiasm. These include being one of the founders of the Central California Soaring Club and being the prime mover that started it's annual Spring contest, drawing other pilots to join him in flying the Montague soaring venue, and the camps he organized out of Parowan, UT. All these events and locations are still just as popular today, and for that we soaring pilots owe a debt to Gary. I kept thinking of the film "Bridges at Toko-Ri" when Brubaker (William Holden), who's wife was also named Nancy (Grace Kelly), crash lands behind enemy lines in Korea and is lost to enemy ground forces . His commanding officer upon learning of his loss asked "Where do we get such men?".
Great account of a Western contest glider pilot, many personal details of his decades of soaring enjoyment and contest experience - both as a contestant and a competition official.

Very entertaining to read. The dry tongue-in-cheek humor suits me just fine. I don't regret having believed the positive comments on rec.aviation.soaring.I was sceptic about e-books, but after all, it's a very good way to publish things that would perhaps never have left the author's computer due to unsufficient interest from the classic "on paper" publishers.
Reads a little like a journal but fun if you were part of the racing world during his time. A man less focused on having the latest and greatest equipment but focused on the people and experiences of his glider racing career. A true role model.
