I found this while I was working on madness in Poe's tales, and finally read the whole book.Reiss, who lost almost all his research papers during Katrina, managed to create a work which combines fine literary analysis, precise historical data and brilliant insights into 19th century political and cultural life. The American perception of madness and lunatic asylums goes way beyond the realms of psychology and psychopathology and reveals a certain vision of man and society.A great book, written in simple and clear sentences but always smart and interesting.
Very interesting perspective on the history of mental illness, as a mentally ill person living in the modern world I can see were some modern day treatments, drugs etc. comes from and I am very grateful.
