The book’s premise is a powerful one: how can established companies combat and ultimately thrive in an era of digital disruption? The authors lay out a structured, step by step approach for companies to assess their capabilities and build a “disruptor's playbook†to compete against new challengers. What I found most helpful were questions about readiness and capability - not only at the corporate level, but at the personal level. The book helped me think about whether and what I could do to be more change ready and aware in my work - which I think others, regardless of where they are in their professional careers - might also find beneficial. A thought provoking read!
Hewlin and Snyder hit the nail on the head in "Goliath's Revenge", completing the full circle from Christensen's work and proving that old dogs can learn new tricks and learn them well and effectively. This book is entertainingly written but full of practical scorecards and evaluation tools that can be used to put their strategic approach into action, both at the company and personal level. It is interesting to note how much of their framework works both for the corporation evaluating their own strategic advantages and tackling change as well as the individual who needs to take stock of career accomplishments and strengths in order to succeed in a changing business environment. This book is a must read for executives who are hoping to look around the corner in a world full of digital uncertainty.
The authors have done it all - executive officers at public companies, start-up founder CEO's, venture capital Investors and trusted advisers to numerous high growth companies. They have taken their deep insights and built a practical template for large incumbents to compete and win in today's digital world. Goliath's Revenge enables big companies to leverage their customer relationships, IP assets, data, and talents to avoid being disrupted by startups. The book is a compelling read and unlike many business books is written in a manner that allows the reader to put the book into action.
Who says old companies can’t change and lead! The six simple rules are easy to understand and provide you with a clear blue print on how to inspire others to help transform Goliaths. A must read for those “intrapreneur†out there that advocate for digital innovation from within.
Hewlin succinctly illustrates successful strategies and mindsets used by disruptive companies, and applies them to established organizations in a seamless way. Not easy, but tangible, evident, and insightful.
A practical how-to guide to understand when your company is facing disruptive threats and how to prepare and organize to win the battle. The normal lifecycle of a successful company with highly profitable companies is to harvest profits as its grow begins to slow and face a decline in relevancy. The authors help you know when to sound the alarm and how to leverage the assets and success to win against scrappy startup threats. The six rules, and end of chapter guides, provide a language and a framework to organize teams and mobilize the company to take real and practical action.
Lots of excellent anecdotes and insights as to how established companies need to rethink their approach to competitiveness in the digital era. Highly, HIGHLY recommended reading.
Snyder and Hewlin give practical advice on how established/big companies can use their capabilities, capital (human and financial), and current revenue to beat the disruptive start ups at their own game. The established companies just need to learn how to get out of their own way. This book teaches them HOW!
