This is a fantastic resource for someone visiting for an extended period of time in Southern Mexico. The author is an authority on birds and has done some elegant research on black birds in the USA, but I digress. The most common animals you are likely to encounter (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and fish) in Southern Mexico are included here. The artwork is wonderful and the written text is brilliant. Lots of details about species, nesting patterns in birds and information about diet. The essays by the author on different topics also make interesting and informative reading. Right, it is not really portable and after two years in Mexico I felt I needed a more comprehensive bird book, but trust me that one is even less portable. You cannot go wrong with this book, just wish he would have included the little flitty birds as I wanted these images for all the warblers we see during the winter. Oh well, cannot have everything!
Lacks a few commonly seen birds species in the Riviera Maya that are also found in the U.S., adding uncertainty on their ID/distribution in the area until checking U.S. field guide. That small omission is a minor deficiency in an otherwise helpful, well-organized and beautifully illustrated guide that covers common mammals and herps, in addition to birds. Recommended as a helpful and portable eco-reference for an unfamiliar area.
This book gives the reader a background history of the social and political situation of the regions to visit. It also gives the readers some insights on how to get around places and also about the locals. When it comes to wildlife, the illustrations are very helpful. I got very lucky to encounter some of the species mentioned in this book during my visit to southern Mexico (summer 2015). I recommend this book to eco travelers and anyone who gets a chance to travel to southern Mexico.

wonderful easy to read book. Almost similar to Audabon's field guide books. good photos of birds. good to have with you while in Mexico, but too heavy for walking. a good sit-down study book.
I have a couple of excellent portable regional field guides, such as the Audubon guide to the Southwest. While this book contains some good information it loses marks for lack of portability.The book includes common amphibians & reptiles, birds, mammals and the coral reef. It has sections on the different habitats in the region and describes places to visit.While I find this is useful to prepare for my trip I will not be using it as a field guide because it is bulkier than I had expected. It seems to have been designed more as an armchair reference: the paper is exceptionally heavyweight and there are essays on a range of ecological issues such as the exotic pet trade.The art work for the birds is very beautiful and printed quite large. But other than very short descriptions on the bird's physical features, habitat and range, most of the information is on family profiles that give a general ecological overview rather than providing information about specific species.The section on fishes and other inhabitants of the coral reef seems to be an excellent field guide: each description concisely describes what you will need to notice to identify the species and provides a few facts that will make observing it more interesting. If I decide to carry the book around on my trip it will be for the sake of this section.Although the book was published in 2007, I think it is probably the same as the book 'Southern Mexico' published several years ago. At one point the text states "as of writing of this book, in 1998...'
