A succinct and interested peek at a truly infamous and shameful period in Britain's history.The arrogant gall of Britain to just move in on (many) countries and impose their rule is breathtaking.Then to have the audacity to 'fine' the invaded country and demand recompense is unfathomable.While the emphasis is on the trade in opium, the author seems to just assume that the reader already knows all about opium growing, production and effects …. information on these aspects, and the level of financial investment and return, would have been appreciated. There is also a lack of information about the effects on the indigenous Chinese in the ongoing wars, turmoil and negotiations.
An excellent history of British arrogance and their ongoing hypocrisy. A must read for history buffs.
This short book (not a scholarly work) kept my interest from start to finish. The writing was well edited and concise. The politics and economics of the opium trade in the far east was new to me. I now understand why China has issues (based on history) with the United Kingdom.
I learned about the opium wars that went on between the different countries, it all started before the Roman Era and continued throughout the years. Some of the countries that were involved in the earlier years were England, China, India were all in the wars before the 1700's. As everyone knows it still is going on today. I love history which is the reason I picked up this overview of opium. I like the Hourly History ebooks. I learn so much in just a short time. Thanks for putting these books out there for all of us.
Excellent and brief review of the occupation of much of China and the forced addition of millions of China, primarilary by the British with involvement with French assistance. A shameful episode in British history.
I had no idea this went on. It is especially interesting since I have been watching Victoria on PBS.
The history of the British people in suppressing the rights of other free nations is staggering. India, Ireland, China managed without conscience are just a few and they wonder why nobody trusts them. This little book is an accurate account of profiteering in something outlawed in their own country. These honourable gentlemen at the game of hypocrisy is truly monumental.
EASY READ, WELL WRITTEN, ENJOYABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. I'd vaguely heard of the Opium wars but had no inkling of British involvement or the why's of it. I'd often wondered about the US War on Drugs policy and what the ramifications are. This gives some more food for thought concerning this war.
