I really like the style of this author's writing. The book is very easy to read and follow, has so much great information. Details are most pertinent for raising different types of poultry - not a bunch of junk to bog down reading. I also agree with this author's point of view regarding the environment and responsibility to the animals we raise for food - this point of view is apparent, without being distracting. Author is not trying to push political agenda - just really common sense farming and livestock practices. Book has side stories and vignettes that add to the enjoyment. You can pick up this book and start reading anywhere, but you will wind up reading the whole book and coming back for reference. Great book for reference/library for any poultry raiser.
I have read several other books on chickens. This book because it covered all kinds of poultry. I thought I would use it as more of just a reference for a few topics. But I could not put it down and read it from cover to cover. There were so many important and interesting topics. Very useful!
Five stars except the editing was terrible as they allowed the author to repeat himself frequently in the same chapter. Having said that, I really like this book because it not only gives a pretty complete reference in raising chickens, but, as the title implies, touches upon other types of poultry such as guinea fowl, water fowl, turkeys, quail, etc.
I bought this book for my daughter, who shows chickens. At her level of competition, the showman must master a wide variety of knowledge about all different species of poultry. The information in this volume keeps her very competitive! It is an all inclusive, thorough book with lots of information and covering many different kinds of birds. We still refer to it often!
I have been a backyard keeper for decades of all kinds of poultry, game birds and waterfowl and I found this book to have a great amount of useable knowledge. I would recommend this book to beginners and seasoned keepers alike.
Admittedly I knew what to expect from the book as it had the look inside feature and there was no disappointment here. Although I wanted more detailed information on how to use some heritage breeds in commercial production, the book has touched on most if not all areas (did not read it in it's entirety). Saying how the book is on the general topic of poultry I'll can safely say it's a great book for hobbyist to persons interested in large scale farming. It may carry more than its penny's worth!
I was impressed by this book and how detailed it is. Everything from raising baby chicks to chicken diseases and remedies to butchering meat poultry. We checked out the Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens from the library, but this book gave just about as much info about chickens as that book plus a lot about other farm birds like turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks, geese and game birds.I liked the author's common sense approach and info about making your own feed. So the book is appropriate if you just want a few backyard hens or want to start raising for both eggs and meat. I would highly recommend this book.
Another great Storeys book you can't go wrong with these they got so much information for the beginner to the pros
