This book coming in Kindle form is a new type of publication which is called a Kindle single. What is this you may ask, it is a unique and quick read much like a long story which gets to the point rather quickly and provides information on subjects such as Churchill’s time in the trenches during WWI serving as a Lt. Colonel. Churchill who was Lord of the Admiralty and who was dually sacked after one of the largest defeats of the British military on the straits of the Dardanelles in 1915, it was later proven that Churchill should have not shouldered the blame for the poor military execution. However at the time Winston felt the boot. Now out of government and only a backbencher, he decided to use what influence he had to command an army unit on the Western Front. Churchill arrived on the front in November of 1915. He was given command of a battalion in the Highlander Regiment. The author Peter Apps goes through the typical protocol of operations in such an army organization at this time of the war. He tells us of Churchill’s modus operandi, his discipline and attitudes of war. The need for cleanliness in a filthy environment was in some way a comical but also serious way of looking out for his men. Reactions of his subordinates were detailed and give to us a clear picture as to what kind of leader Churchill was both militarily and personally. As noted by the author, Churchill was experienced in war and though the civilian head of the Navy, he was first and foremost a cavalry man and a graduate of Sand Hurst. In 1898 Churchill took part in the last great cavalry charge at the Battle of Omdurman. To Churchill this experience influenced him as he came back into the government and changed his attitudes of a stagnant war and made him aware of the need for maneuver and the need to end a war as quickly as possible. Good insight in a white paper form.
A summary of the book on StrategyPage:'Reuter’s defense correspondent Apps takes a look at Winston Churchill’s experiences at the Front during the Great War, a subject oddly neglected despite the relative flood of recent writing on the man. He opens with an overview of Churchill’s early life and political career, takes a quick look at his stint as First Lord of the Admiralty, including his heroics – or antics – in the defense of Antwerp, and his loss of office as a result of the Gallipoli disaster. Apps then takes up, in some detail, Churchill’s decision to serve at the front in late 1915. Following a short a “familiarization†tour at the Front with the Grenadier Guards, Churchill, promoted to lieutenant colonel, assumed command of the 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Churchill spent five months in command, in a sector near Ypres, two-thirds of the time in the trenches, with, in an odd coincidence of history, Adolph Hitler in the German lines opposite! During Churchill’s tenure, the battalion was never heavily engaged, but it suffered hundreds of wounded and some deaths, and he himself had several close calls. By drawing on many letters, diaries, and other first hand accounts, Apps demonstrates that Churchill was a very good officer, well-liked by his men. We also see the extent to which the man enjoyed the experience of command under fire and the degree to which his experiences at the Front helped shape Churchill’s decision-making in World War Two. Short, and certainly not definitive, this is a useful read for anyone interested in Churchill or life at the Front in the Great War.'For the full review, see StrategyPage
YES, YES, YES.The Saturday of Winston Churchill's funeral, the girlfriend and I went shopping early so as to get back to watch the funeral on TV. Instead of beating the shopping rush we were right in the middle of it. Everyone was doing the same thing. To this day his funeral is still a moving Memory;imprinted on my mind. This book revealed a lot of detail previously unknown. This informative read about his time in the trenches of WW1 certainly helps one understand his inner Man; his thinking process then. It enlightens one as to his approach/behaviour in WW2. This is a 'Do Not Miss' read.Just watched cuts of his funeral on You Tube.-- Indeed Memories are made off this.
If character is revealed during the lowest point of a man’s life then Churchill has plenty of it. If a movie were made from this book Churchill would be depicted getting a “bad news bears†unit and leading them to victory. The author does a good job of showing that didn’t happen, but that Churchill did serve honorably in the trenches and was a decent leader of soldiers (to the degree that he wanted to be). Also shows his constant machinations to return to power. One very interesting side note was that his time in the trenches made him an ardent supporter of conscription which was wifey supported by front line soldiers, which in the post Vietnam American mind is something that surprised me.
For those of us who admire Churchill's life and times this short book fills in an important episode in his biography. That he served in the front lines is well known, and the fact that he transported a bath tub to his billet is also well known and often sneered at. That he was, over all, loved and admired by his troops is not so well known, nor is his wanderings in no-man's-land or his exposure to enemy fire. None of the latter was necessary but the man led from the front and did not worry much about his personal mortality. Apparently he was destined for his great future.
Interesting read, appears to be well researched and annotated. Kindle purchases for me are like an extended magazine article to be read while traveling. There was a lot to learn about the man, his family, and his political supporters and antagonists in 138 pages. Overall, educational, insightful and entertaining. Highly recommended for anyone interested in WWI, WWI politics, and (Of course.) Winston Churchill.
Being born in '48, I learned of Churchill. I knew of his role as prime minister during the war and of his great encouraging speeches. This book gives great insight to the mans life experiences.
